prelude to springtime in my driveway
3 FebAll the yellow is underground,
shut with the first song of spring
in the brown bulb wombs of daffodils.
I have a plastic bucket of soil
and a stainless blade for digging.
All the yellow is underground.
But in the forest, frost has come to foil
my plan to gather flower gold, guarding
the buried bulbs of daffodils.
Primitive. With an iron tooth I toil,
slashing the solid earth while singing,
"All the yellow is underground."
To the loosed earth, my hands are loyal --
swift and certain, they begin collecting
the unborn bulbs of daffodils.
Now concrete and gravel will become royal
with the stolen flower birth of spring --
for all the yellow was underground
in the brown bulb wombs of daffodils.

golden arches
15 NovBeneath McDonald's golden arches one November afternoon, I sat in the graying bluebonnet grass, and pondered paradise —
beyond the gates, a shimmering city, a river pulsing red juice from ripened fruit of the vine, and Christ divine, hot white, glowing brighter than a compact fluorescent light bulb.
Beneath McDonald's golden arches some November afternoon, I saw a red feathered cardinal flutter behind a dumpster of flattened cardboard; seven black barrels of canola oil waiting to be wine.
